UAB Designated Holidays
Personal Holidays for Exempt (Monthly) Employees
Monthly-paid (exempt) employees who take the UAB designated holidays will receive the new 3-day grant of PH on July 1st each year. These personal holidays must be used (requested, fully approved, and taken) by June 30th of the following year. Any days not used by June 30th are automatically forfeited.
Exempt employees who accrue personal holidays monthly (in lieu of taking the designated holidays) are allowed to accrue up to twelve (12) days. If extra holidays are designated by UAB during the year, the PH accrual balance may be temporarily increased to allow for the additional days given. Temporary increases expire on June 30th unless extended by UAB administration. Balances in excess of the amount allowed per policy must be used by June 30th or they will be automatically forfeited. Otherwise, accrued PH does not expire.
Personal Holidays for Non-Exempt (Biweekly) Employees
Biweekly-paid (non-exempt) employees who take the UAB designated holidays will receive the new 3-day (24 hour) grant of PH at the beginning of the last pay period in June that has a pay date in July. Personal holidays must be used (requested, fully approved, and taken) by the end of the last pay period with a pay date in June of the following year. Any personal holidays not used by end of the last pay period with a pay date in June are automatically forfeited.
Non-exempt employees who accrue personal holiday hours biweekly in lieu of taking the designated holidays are allowed to accrue up to ninety-six (96) hours. If extra holidays are added during the year, the PH accrual balance may be temporarily increased to allow for the additional days given. Temporary increases expire at end of the last pay period with a pay date in June unless extended by UAB administration. Balances in excess of the amount allowed per policy must be used by the end of the last pay period with a pay date in June or they will be automatically forfeited. Otherwise, accrued PH does not expire.

A: The balance on June 30th will be forfeited and the time will be deducted from the new PH balance.
Q: I accrue PH but my department closes on holidays. Do I have to use PH for the designated holidays?
A: YES. Employees who accrue PH are required to enter a time off request if their department closes on a designated holiday.
